Experience

This will be my thirty-first year as a classroom teacher. I am a graduate of Shorter College with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I attended Lesley University where I obtained my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Design. I have also earned both the Reading and Gifted Endorsements. I currently hold a T-5 (Master’s Degree) teaching certificate in the State of Georgia and  I am highly qualified to teach your child. Over the last twenty-eight years, I have had the privilege of teaching first, third, and fourth grade at Emerson, Adairsville, Belwood, and Sonoraville Elementary Schools before coming to W.L. Swain. I feel that my experience will help to build a strong foundation of learning for each child in order for them to be successful this year and beyond.

Dear Parents,

Well, it’s that time of the year again, BACK TO SCHOOL! As we all know this is a time of anxiety, nervousness, learning, and most of all excitement at the thought of beginning a new school year! As we begin this new school year, I would like to welcome you and your child to W.L. Swain! I am very excited about working with your child and look forward to working with you this year! My goal is to instill a love of learning in children.

This will be my thirty-first year as a classroom teacher. I am a graduate of Shorter College with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I attended Lesley University where I obtained my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Design. I have also earned both the Reading and Gifted Endorsements. I currently hold a T-5 (Master’s Degree) teaching certificate in the State of Georgia and I am professionally qualified to teach your child.

I have a lot of new ideas for teaching the standards that encourage students to be creative, imaginative, and to become critical thinkers. These real-world math, social studies, and science tasks will allow them to come up with a variety of solutions to solve the problems that they face in everyday situations. This will help them make connections between what is being taught and how it applies to their world. I am so excited about sharing new and inventive ways to teach our standards.

I look forward to being involved in your child’s learning experiences! I will be sending communication folders and graded work home each Monday.  Please look over the folders. Look over the work closely as it will keep you informed about what we’re doing at school. I understand that learning techniques and strategies have changed tremendously since many of us attended school, so feel free to email me ANY questions about ways to help your child at home or if you need help understanding a skill. My email address is choward@gcbe.org. I usually respond to emails prior to the school day beginning, after 4:00, and before going to bed at night.

One important thing to remember, there is NEVER a dumb question! I have two daughters, Sierra Howard-Jones and Deidra. While they attended Sonoraville, I asked questions and often emailed their teachers to clear up confusion and ask advice about ways to help them at home. Never hesitate to email me questions or suggestions. Our job is to work together to strengthen your child’s education and communication is a key part in making this a successful year. If you do not have email, please feel free to send a note or call the school and ask the secretaries to leave me a message to return your call. Remember, I cannot accept or make calls during school hours unless it is an EMERGENCY so please be patient. I will contact you at the end of the day. I look forward to a great year! Thanks for sharing your child with me!
